Maintaining Your Septic System

Your septic system needs to be cared for, or it may just come back to haunt you in the form of a smelly mess. It can be hard to know exactly what to do with a septic system. The "out of sight, out of mind" saying does not really apply to a septic system. If you do not try to keep your septic system as clean as possible, it is going to get backed up. There are a few things that you can do that will help keep the septic system of your home functioning.

One of the most important aspects of your septic system is the bacteria that are actively breaking down the sewage. The colonies of bacteria are absolutely essential to the breakdown of sewage. You want to keep these colonies alive and healthy. That is why it is so important to remember not to simply flush anything down the toilet, or put anything down the drain. One liquid is especially common, but can do a great deal of harm. When you get a clogged drain, you most likely reach for liquid drain cleaners. These will bust through a regular clog, but they are also very good at killing off the bacteria in the system. Instead of using liquid drain cleaners to get the clog out, use a pipe snake.

A Trash Can

One of the very best things that you can do to keep your septic tank functioning is use a trash can. When you think that you should flush it or put it down the sink, use a trash can. Anything that is not sewage or water should not make it to your septic system. When you think about putting something down the garbage disposal, put it in the garbage. Anything that is hard to break down can cause a major problem for you in the future.

Have a professional pump your septic system once every other year at least. This will keep your system from becoming backed up. It is also a great idea to have your plumber show you exactly where the septic tank is located. This way you will be able to avoid putting overburden stress on the top of the tank. If you are consistently parking your car on the tank, it could cause problems. Also have the plumber show you where the septic drain field is so you do not obstruct the drain field.
